What can be attributed to the success of Vinted in France, and is it likely to spread to the UK? Vinted in France has stricter rules for frequent sellers, and if you make more than 20 transactions over a year or earn over €3,000, you must declare this to the tax authorities. However, occasional sellers who are just selling personal clothing rather than collector’s pieces are exempt from taxes on those sales. Currently, all vinted sellers are exempt from taxes in the UK, which may encourage a surge in people wanting to sell exclusive pieces before a similar tax regime is introduced in the UK. France has a bigger market for one-of-a-kind, timeless pieces, which is what Vinted offers best. The UK still sees a majority market of people looking for cheaper alternatives to fast fashion, rather than people looking for quality pieces that will last a long time. Seventeen years ago, Vinted was created with the dream for “all girls in the world to make photos of their closets so I can browse in them”, says Milda Mitkute, the co-founder. The first is called the 'sandwich method'. This method involves matching an item of clothing on your upper body (say a black top), to an item of clothing on your lower body (say black shoes), with a different colour of clothing in between (say blue jeans). The role of colour and attraction has been talked about for a while in the fashion industry. Colour theory - the study of how colours work together to influence our emotions and perceptions of something - has been around since Sir Isaac Newton invented the colour wheel in 1666. Newton described colours as human perceptions, instead of exact wavelengths of light, identifying three primary colours - red, yellow and blue (Interaction Design Foundation, 2016). Interestingly enough, the colour red has been found to increase attraction for men, with men more likely to perceive someone as attractive if they wear the colour red (you know what colour to wear on the first date now). In a 2021 study by the University of Rochester, men reported feeling more sexually attracted to women that wore red - even more likely to spend more money on dates. While it has been found that black is the most popular colour to wear on a first date (regardless of gender or sexual orientation), red is in fact more likely to increase attraction. Though the colour black may seem like the 'safe' option when picking a top to wear, the colour black creates a fashionable and attractive perception of the wearer (Wave, 2024). According to colour psychology- research interested in how colour affects human behaviour and emotions- there are 'better' colours we can wear if we want to increase our attraction, with black and red ranking highest. Apparently, 90% of an initial impression we make comes from colour, with 93% of consumers making purchases based on visual appearance alone. If this evidence doesn't convince you of the importance of colour and attraction, look to many luxury and tech companies, where colour and aesthetic is the soul to their corporation. Take Chanel for example, a French luxury fashion brand. Their logo is simple and black in design, using colour theory to exemplify their brand- sophisticated, powerful, elegant, and most importantly, expensive. Many tech companies have also adopted black as their brand, with 3 in 10 tech companies using black in their logos (Maybray, 2022). Working with designer Kansai Yamamoto he created looks for his alter ego Ziggy Stardust and the Aladdin Sane era that would lead to the bridging of glam and rock. Bowie’s personal style would influence Jean Paul Gautier, Hedi Slimane, and Alexander McQueen. The key impact of Bowie was the idea of transformation. That gender isn’t a limitation for clothing. In fact you can transform yourself day to day, that change is allowed and freeing. For rockstars costume was a way to transform personality to a public character. Bowie’s style wasn’t all just bright colour and tight costumes, but he also was known for his tailoring. Bowie played around with his style and did not feel that they had to stick to one ‘aesthetic’. Or that he had to be loyal to a stereotypically more masculine or feminine style. He also normalised sexuality not having to be connected to clothing. In many old interviews journalists would question Bowie’s style and sexuality, which Bowies would intelligently shoot down or question them back. Why does what shoes or clothes someone wears make you question their gender or sexuality. Why do we have to connect clothes to that? Bowie has left a legacy of experimentation going further than gender and sexuality. It doesn’t matter or is anyone’s business what clothes you wear and what that means about you personally. Bases on Anne Rice’s book of the same name, Louis’ story begins in 1910s New Orleans. Throughout the series, we watch as Louis is pursued and turned by the vampire Lestat, and the creation of their ‘daughter’ Claudia. In the first of many flashbacks, we see Louis’ mortal life as a wealthy businessman in a red-light neighbourhood known as ‘Storyville’. When business begins to boom towards the end of the decade, Louis starts to wear more vibrant colours. Costume designer Carol Cutshall notes being inspired by Black Vaudeville when designing Louis’ nightlife looks - specifically, what actors were wearing when they were off the stage. As a black business owner in the American south, his business and identity are constantly under threat. While Louis may be in the same social circles as them, by no means is he viewed as their equal. His constant high standard of clothing reflects his need to not only conform but go above what would be expected of him. This isn’t just a question of fashion, but of survival. After being turned into a vampire by Lestat, Louis’ feelings of inadequacy are heightened by the need to hide his true nature from his family. Returning to his family home for his nieces’ birthdays, Louis arrives in a red pinstripe suit, with matching tie and tinted sunglasses. Cutshall uses the motif of stripes throughout the series to reflect a character’s feelings of entrapment and discontent. Here, Louis puts on the front of both the successful businessman, and mortal. Stripes become more prominent in Louis wardrobe from this point, as tensions begin to appear in Louis and Lestat’s relationship. Louis feels, as Cutshall puts it, like, “an animal caged by his affection for his creator, lover and abuser”. It's clear Louis is styling Claudia at this point, as she reflects his style of tailored elegance, and fashionable colouring. Yet this highlights her lack of agency – she does not choose the outfits she wears. As Claudia’s mind begins to mature, she begins resenting her immortal parents – particularly Lestat. As she becomes older, warm tones begin to feature more and more in her wardrobe. For example, many children still go guising on Halloween, still facing the expectation you’ll do a turn if you want a reward. Even some more famous traditions like dookin’ (bobbing) for apples or playing party games have Celtic roots. In some traditions, after retrieving your apple you would peel a section and throw it over your shoulder. Whatever shape it made revealed the initial of your future spouse. When I was growing up, a game that was always a people pleaser was trying to eat a doughnut (traditionally a treacle scone) hung off a string without using your hands - which is just as crazy as it sounds. Most known for their famous velour tracksuits every girl in the early 2000s owned. These velvet tracksuits came as a pair of low-rise flared bottoms and a zip-up cropped hoodie. However, the most notable feature of the tracksuit was the bedazzled ‘juicy’ written across the backside of the tracksuit. These tracksuits came in every color you could imagine and were seen on every celebrity of that time. Along with these tracksuits the famous handbags were created, as well as t-shirts and jewellery. The large logos, with the jewelled elements and the bright colours were a key to the brand and were part of the reason it has stayed in the market. This is now a brand new staple to many girls' wardrobes, from seeing them all over social media to the comfiest outfit for those long library days, or even dressed up with a nice pair of kitten heels and a top they can be seen in bars now too. Low rise Another staple that has seen a return is the low-rise jeans. Love them or hate them they have come back in full force. These jeans are a practical purchase from the rise of this style in recent years with them being perfect for any club night out (specifically tamagotchi tuesday), to a lecture with a baby tee, or even a fun shopping day. The wear you will get from these is unbelievable. Along with these usually comes the recommendation of a belt, if you're looking to stick with the Y2K style then a chunky buckle or a rhinestone edgy toned belt would be the perfect combinations. So I know you mentioned fashion society, but what other experience do you have with fashion, either professionally or personally? Trinity: So, not much professional experience really. I don't think I'm really looking for anything professional. I mean, maybe in another life. But yeah, no, I went down the science route. So, I don't know, fashion's always been my main form of self expression. I've always loved creative stuff, like I did art and drama growing up, so it's like my main creative outlet now. But, I've met, like most of my friends, through fashion related things like vintage shopping and stuff like that. I don't know. I just got a sewing machine at Christmas, so I really want to start making my own clothes. But it's all for fun, really. Lily: What is your role on the committee this year? Trinity: I’m the treasurer! Lily: Have you had any experience with treasurer roles before? Trinity: I haven't, no. I’ve never actually done a committee role before. My undergrad was messed up by COVID. Lily: I have actually always wondered: what does a treasurer actually do? Trinity: *Laughing* Basically just manages all the finances. Make sure that we manage our budget well enough to be able to do most of the events and everything like that. For fashion society our main events were the sex and the city night and the fashion show. So, essentially making sure that we can do the most for that and then making sure the money goes to charity and things like that. Lily: How do you think your previous experience will help you in your role this year? Trinity: I do stem, so I’m good at maths. Good counting comes with the territory. And then, I don't know, fashion has always been more of a fun thing for me. So I think doing a lot of activities, or, like, just based on fashion in general when I go out with my friends, I can bring a lot of suggestions to events we could do. Because really, I just want to get to know everyone, and do loads of fun events. The Victoria Secret Fashion Show came back and one of the biggest trends of the year was the Slavic Doll aesthetic. Edits of Ukrainian model Snejana Onopka explaining her diet of “basically nothing” to dark background music were inescapable if you searched “model” on Tiktok. The biggest models of the 2000s could be found walking the streets of New York with a Chanel bag in hand living the dream life. The backstage of fashion shows had girls all together getting their hair and makeup done and hanging out with their friends. As these photos and videos went viral on TikTok so did a specific type of model; the thin, blonde, tall and Eastern European model. The Slavic Bimbo aesthetic had already made the rounds on social media of typically American girls wearing lingerie and a ushanka in the snow. The Slavic Doll aesthetic was a more “classy” version of this aesthetic which is why it got more popular than the “bimbo”. The girls wore skinny jeans, knee high boots, a black turtleneck (usually carrying a fashion magazine) and always carrying a luxury bag. Models in the 2000s and 2010s were overworked and only a select few actually made a lot of money. They were under constant pressure to be skinny and as Onopka said to eat “basically nothing, my stomach is still working,”. However instead of the internet viewing this as a sad and terrible thing it became a trend and something to work to. Videos like “Eating like a Slavic Doll” (which suspiciously had no actual slavic food) and “Model-skinny workout” became popular. The long lean and extremely underweight look became packaged as a health conscious and attainable goal for everyone. Yet barely anyone stated the obvious these girls likely had disordered eating habits and the promotion of the “Slavic Doll” brought the internet back 10 years to the 2014 tumblr ED-aesthetic. The fashion industry is an extremely harsh place and what models have to experience whilst in it should not be romanticised but changed. As young models can fall into the trap of believing the only way to get booked is to look a certain way and listen to whatever their agency or what photographers tell them that do not actually have their best interests. Foreveryone, we saw the main outfits involving classic rock band tour t-shirts, for Dave Grohl and Nirvana as well as Foo Fighters own. Many leather jackets and docs were again used here to give the classic rock star look. The country artist came to the UK for his latest tour. Most country fans brought out their denim and best cowboy looks for the night. The all-black outfit with a different colored boot was seen in great amounts. A personal favorite of mine is the red cowboy boots Julianne Hough wore in Footloose (2011), which I go out and buy myself. This is likely to be played into when she eventually comes to the UK. While for shoes there’ll be a lot of platform boots much like the ones worn by her on the Eras tour. It was born from the punk and post-punk movements. In 1979, British producer Martin Hannett described the Manchester post-punk band, Joy Division as ‘Gothic’ and this description led the term to be used for bands having moody and haunting themes. Some bands include: Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, The March Violets, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Depeche Mode. Goth is a music based subculture. Although it is music based that doesn’t make it not political. Like I stated, Goth was born from the punk movement making it inherently: anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, anti-bigotry, and anti-consumerism. The core values however are all about expressing yourself, nonviolence, freedom in sexuality and gender, and not being shackled by society’s expectations. When it comes to fashion, the main part is looking different and shocking. Such as Demonia, and Lip Service which widened the spread of dressing the part of a ‘misfit’. Goth fashion in the 90s made its way into high fashion in the collections of Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Valentino, Mugler. Their collections used a moody and dark palette with vampiric inspirations. In the 90s people began experimenting with the Goth style but not listening to the music or being involved in the culture leading to the ‘mall goth’. This is because they were typically found hanging out in shopping malls, and having little knowledge of the subculture's values. The start of Hot Topic further led to the commercialisation of Goth style. It led to the Mall goth looking like a mix of grunge, punk, goth rather than more traditional Goth styles. A big part of being Goth is using the clothes you already have, thrifting and DIY-ing, however buying clothes from Hot Topic is not gonna make you a ‘poser’. A Slavic Girl’s Response to Winter’s Hottest Trend - Image Courtesy of British Vogue Instead of emulating oligarch wives this aesthetic’s icons are Eastern European models from the 2000s like Vlada Roslyakova, Tanya Dziahileva, and my personal favourite Natalia Vodianova. Their delicate features, porcelain skin, striking blue eyes, blonde locks, and tall lean figures were unlike anything the fashion industry had seen before and earned them the label the “Slavic Dolls”. These girls were captivating not only for their cold fragile beauty, but also for their rags to riches stories: Roslyakova, a girl born into a poor family from Siberia, became a regular on the catwalks of Paris, New York and Milan; Vodianova went from selling fruits on the roads of her small Russian town to walking for the biggest designers in the world and eventually married into aristocracy. How can a girl not be inspired? But how is that reflected in the aesthetic? Usually aesthetics have signature pieces like bows for the coquettes or fur coats for the “Slavic Bimbo”, but the “Slavic Doll” lacks such iconography. Truth is that, in terms of visuals, the only thing unifying these women are their looks and skinny bodies. The former are their ethnic features. The lather - the harmful beauty standards enforced by the modeling industry at the time. So the “Slavic Doll” aesthetic is not about fashion, but about fitting into a very restricted mode of beauty. Their friendship was really highlighted after her involvement in a drug scandal back in 2005, where she was dropped from brands such as Chanel and H&M over the allegations. All charges were dropped against her in late 2006. However during this time of Backlash, at the spring/summer show for Alexander Mcqueen the designer was seen running down the runway at the end wearing a t-shirt with the words, “we love you Kate”. Oddly, the letter ‘h’ was missing from the word ‘daughter’ on Charli’s top. Is there a reason for this spelling mishap, or was there just a dyslexic printer? Girl, so confusing. My heart goes out to those in attendance at this tour who were neither a gay son or a thot daughter; the boyfriends, whose girlfriends probably only dragged them along with them to hold their jacket and chauffeur them home. Charli has a fondness for Acne Studios, wearing a pair of their loose fitting, distressed jeans to her ‘brat and it’s completely different but also still brat’ listening party at the Storm King Art Centre in New Windsor, New York. Molly-Mae’s debut brand Maebe sold out its first collection in a matter of minutes, leaving many fans disappointed that they weren’t able to get their hands on the brand’s classic, “luxury” pieces. But the speed of the sell out isn’t the only negative feedback that the brand has received, with many criticising the price point, quality and lack of transparency surrounding Maebe. A lot of this criticism focuses on the price point and quality of the garments. Critics say that for the fabric and makeup of the clothes, cheaper prices could be found at brands like Pretty Little Thing and even Shein, while higher quality with similar price points can also be found elsewhere. According to Maebe’s website, the brand’s £140 grey blazer is made of 63% Polyester, 19% Viscose and 18% Acrylic.
